We hope you are interested in finding out more about Lister’s Management Committee and how you could participate more and how to join the Committee (if you are a Lister tenant).
The Management Committee is the body responsible for the running of Lister (though they employ staff and consultants to carry out the day-to-day work).
All tenants at Lister are members (shareholders) of the Lister Housing Co-operative Ltd and at each Annual General Meeting (AGM) any member can stand for the Committee, and vote for those standing. For more information about the AGM, visit Annual General Meeting.
Committee structure and operation
The Committee comprises 7 to 15 people (it can co-opt up to a third of its number too) and meets monthly – usually the last Tuesday of the month (except December) in the evening.
The Committee, at its meetings, receives reports and advice from the staff, and takes decisions, and monitors projects & activities. It decides on the strategy and direction of the Co-op as well as overseeing the staff, liaising with external bodies and dealing with any strategic issues requiring attention.
We encourage all Lister tenants to come along and see their Management Committee in action. We hold a brief introductory session just before a Committee meeting about twice a year, for all new tenants in the last six months. We hope you will come along and see us.
Any tenant can also come to any Committee meeting for all the business (except for any confidential items – quite rare), though they may be asked to leave the meeting if necessary at any time by the Chairperson (again rare).
Joining the Committee
Serving as a Committee member is both interesting and worthwhile. It could also give you valuable skills and experience that you could use elsewhere in your life, and enhance your c.v. and employment prospects. Training is available for Committee members and more information is available from the CEO, John Rankin, at the Lister office.
The best time to stand for the Committee is at the AGM in September each year. Before the AGM, forms to be nominated for the Committee are distributed to all Lister tenants and must be returned by a fixed date. It is possible also to join the Committee (by co‑option) during a year.
Committee members have to abide by Lister’s Rules or constitution (PDF, 292Kb, opens in a new window) – and act in a voluntary capacity. You would not receive any payment for your work, only expenses for specific incurred costs. You cannot benefit from your position nor receive favourable treatment in any way – neither can your close relatives.
Lister keeps providing its good service through the efforts of individual tenants who join the Committee – so please ask to get involved if you think you can contribute.
