About our housing

Lister has 185 flats in and around Lauriston Place, between the Art College and George Heriot’s School. All are tenement flats – we have no houses. Our properties are located in two ‘blocks’ of housing, as follows: –

Main Site – north of Lauriston Place

A rectangular block round a large communal back green.

  • Heriot Place – 35 flats
  • Keir Street –  52 flats
  • Lauriston Place (evens) – 48 flats

New Site – south of Lauriston Place

A horse-shoe block round a smaller communal back green.

  • Lauriston Terrace – 12 flats
  • Lauriston Place (odds) – 20 flats
  • Archibald Place – 18 flats

Most of our flats are 2 bed or larger, for families; we have only a few 1 bed flats. We have no sheltered housing, nor care homes, nor support services. We have some amenity flats (for people who are elderly or with a disability) and two wheelchair flats. We also have five ‘Multi’ flats – shared housing for single people, where 4 or 6 single people share a larger flat, each with their own tenancy.

Rents are set by Lister and are very affordable – typically £305 per month for a 1 bed rising to £370 per month for a 3 bed.  Some common stairs have a small service charge for stair cleaning/stair window cleaning. All rents are eligible for Housing Benefit and Universal Credit.

Vacancy rates

Here are our property sizes and typical vacancy rates:

Bedsit – 7 flats – vacancy rate 1 every 3 year

1 bed – 22 flats – vacancy rate 1 per year

2 bed – 89 flats – vacancy rate 2-4 per year

3 bed – 52 flats – vacancy rate 1 per year

4 bed – 8 flats – vacancy rate – very very low

5/6 beds – 2 flats – vacancy rate – very very low

‘Multis’ – four 4 bed flats and one 6 bed flat. – 2-4 rooms per year.
